Chengdu -Where Tradition Never Dies

Chengdu -Where Tradition Never DiesIf you’re ever in the southwest region of China, don’t miss Chengdu.

You’ll recognize it by its impressively clean streets and the astounding number of tea houses throughout the city.  It’s said that “China has the best tea houses in the world, but Chengdu has the best tea houses in China.”

They’re a social focal point where business people hold meetings, where lovers get together, where families gather for an afternoon of fun and where the elderly go to relax.  Tea houses are even used by mediators who wish to settle an argument or dispute.

At the tea houses of Chengdu, tradition is alive and well.  Set foot in any of these classy establishments and you’ll be greeted by a friendly hostess.  Once you’re seated, a “tea doctor” will hand you a lovely porcelain cup with saucer on a boat shaped tray.  He will proceed to pour the delectable liquid from a brass pot boasting a spout three foot long.  As you’ll notice, not a drop is ever spilled.  It’s an art that’s been preserved for centuries.

In many of these establishments, visitors can enjoy a light snack of melon or sesame seeds.  And while sipping on your cup of Darjeeling, you can join a meditation session or delight in an amazing Sichuan opera performances.

Take time to visit the Royal Gardens, the Tea Museum, the Tian’Gai Temple and the factory.  If interested, you’ll learn about tea plantation methods, benefits and picking processes.

Chengdu is ideal for a visit any time of the year.  Winter is cool and void of snow.  If you choose the spring months, you’ll get the chance to see the colorful hibiscus flowers planted back in the 10th century and that bloom throughout the entire town.

But if you’re wondering which of the thousands of salons to experience, try the popular Yudai Tea House featuring daily opera shows or the Heming located inside the stunning Renmin Park.

Stop by the Dabei Temple Tea Establishment where you’ll have the opportunity to view marvelous architecture and observe the antique Chinese calligraphy ornamenting its walls.

Or opt for the Wenshu Monastery where you can watch ancient tea serving ceremonies.

Journey to a region where old customs are still revered today.
