The Two Most Unusual Restaurants in the World

If you’re naturally attracted to the unique and unusual, you’ll want to experience an evening at one of the only two cavern restaurants on the planet.

You’re probably thinking that there are more than just two.  But in reality, the ones found in other countries are inside caves.

What sets them apart?  Unlike in a cave, in a cavern you’ll see “icicle-like” formations derived from water.  It’s impressive and interesting to see.  Both of the eateries are situated in the Caribbean.  One of them is located in Mexico in Playa del Carmen.  At Restaurant & Lounge Alux, you can savor a delectable dinner seven days a week.  To enter, you’ll have to descend a steep rock stairway leading to a group of “cavernous” rooms.  One’s set up for dining, a second one is arranged as a bar, a third one is customized for lounging and the fourth one turns into a disco late at night.  Its décor is the creation of a leading designer.  He used special light effects to give the stalactites and stalagmites different shades of color.  The menu features a fantastic line-up of Mexican and American starters and main courses.  Among them are the lightly breaded calamari and the duck in raspberry sauce.

The second cavern eatery is located in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic.  It’s been open to the public since 1967 and aside from being one of the best gourmet restaurants in the country, it boasts historical importance.  That’s due to the fact that a plethora of artifacts were found inside the grottos.  Some of them were left by the Taino Indians.  Others belonged to pirates who stayed hidden while planning their attack on the city.  Its list of superb dishes offers a number of Creole delicacies as well as the chef’s daily recommendations.  Bring your appetite and try a delicious conch salad with avocado, or calamari in curry and papaya.  Continue on with a tasteful stewed conch or a Dominican style stew with chorizo, blood sausage and pork.  If you’re a seafood lover, don’t miss the rice with lobster and mixed fish or opt for the grilled salmon.

Both caverns are romantic and an experience not to be missed.
