Tracking Gorillas in East Africa

Tracking Gorillas in East AfricaIf you’re an animal lover or nature enthusiast, you’ll find a journey to the Virunga Mountain region in the Rwanda/Uganda border absolutely fascinating.

The area which is home to the endangered mountain gorilla affords some of the most magnificent scenery.

Sign up for a six or eight day tour and you’ll have a chance to view a wealth of eco-systems, the beauty of the Albertine Rift Valley or to canoe down to Toyo Island.  And when you come face to face with the volcanic range of the Virunga Mountains, you’ll be utterly amazed by its commanding stature.

If you’re patient enough and don’t mind waiting and walking through wet lands and mud, you’ll eventually witness a number of gorillas.  They’re slowly disappearing from the face of the earth due to poaching, land destruction and war.  But you too can help in caring for the environment and in the preservation of this gentle species.  Many conservationists here are currently working towards saving the tropical forests of East Africa.  They’re continuing the works began years ago by Diane Fossey whose life was immortalized by the movie “Gorillas in the Mist.”  On your journey, take time to visit her grave situated adjacent to the burial site of her favorite gorillas.

As you continue on with your exploration, see the breathtaking gem colored Lake Mutanda bordered by volcanoes.  At your arrival in Mgahinga Rest Camp, you’ll come to a focal point where the borders of three African nations meet.  Take notice of the impressive vistas and witness the gorilla families living on the northern slopes of the volcanoes.  And if you have time, drive through the valleys known as the “Switzerland of Africa.”  You’ll reach the Bwindi Forest where you’ll encounter a wide range of bird species, butterflies and chimpanzees.

Finding accommodations in this part of the world is not a challenge.  There’s a fine list of options for every taste and budget.  Consider, for instance, the Travelers Rest Hotel in the corner of Uganda beneath the Virunga range.  Its colonial style, well-appointed rooms and superb restaurants makes it the ideal base from where to go on an eco-tour or gorilla spotting.

Help save the planet and feast your eyes of nature’s gentle giants.
