Dining in the Ocean’s Depths

If you’re looking for an out-of-the ordinary experience, you won’t go wrong with dining at Ithaa Restaurant.

But don’t bother looking for it in plain view.  Chances are you won’t be able to find it.  This amazing restaurant sits five meters below the surface of the Indian Ocean in an area of the world best known for its picturesque beaches and reefs.

Ithaa is located in the Maldives Islands and is part of the Conrad Maldives Rangali Hotel, formerly the Hilton Maldives.  But don’t disregard it if you’re not a scuba diver.  Getting to the main entrance only requires that you walk on a wooden pier and down a spiral staircase.  Upon entering, you’ll find yourself surrounded by the most breathtaking marine life.

The Ithaa is made of acrylic, thus enabling diners to enjoy the 270 degree vistas of the coral reefs.  But fret not.  It’s sturdy enough that none of the predators swimming around can get to you.

With a capacity for just a few tables and only fourteen people at a time it’s best you make reservations with ample time in advance.  The food is as fantastic as the views.  It’s somewhat pricy, but this is one meal you’ll never forget.

And though it’s difficult to concentrate on the food, take pleasure in every bite for everything is of the finest quality.  The staff will welcome you with a champagne cocktail.  If you prefer a non-alcoholic beverage, the “Sai” tea, indigenous of the Maldives and flavored with aromatic herbs, is quite refreshing.  You’ll then be asked to pick a warm or cold appetizer.  Try the raw yellow fin tuna prepared with lime dust and oil.  Or choose the lamb loin with tahini.  For a main course, the line up is astounding.  Savor a pickled lobster in tomato gel and sour lime or perhaps the red snapper with curry.  If you’re not in the mood for seafood, opt for the chef’s signature baked duck spiced with coriander.

While admiring the beautiful sting rays, turtles and other colorful fish, indulge in dessert.  Among the favorites are the mango mousse flavored with essence of cardamom, chocolates dipped in rose water and muffins made with dark bananas.

So bring your appetite and prepare to be in awe.
