If you’re looking for true adventure, the Carnivals of Venice are second to none. These unique festivities offer excitement, nonstop fun and a certain mystique that beckons to be discovered. Venice’s carnivals have been popular since the 13th century when European royalty frequented the Italian city in a chance to indulge in recreational pursuits while incognito. The grandeur of balls and celebrations gave the Venice Carnivals a prestige among aristocrats. But with the aid of masks, many “commoners” managed to get in by pretending to be someone else. It’s how the fine art of mask making began in Venice, and the tradition continues today. But aside from lavish parties in palaces, the city comes alive with tourists from all parts of the globe that come for the music, singing and juggling acts that take place all around the town’s canals. The events begin two weeks prior to Ash Wednesday and continue through the Tuesday before. It symbolizes the beginning of spring and all the hopes it brings. To immerse in the true spirit of the season, purchase a costume and one of the beautifully hand-made masks. Many of these are created from leather or authentic papier-mâché. Modern designs are somewhat more elaborate using feathers, gold leaf and colored stones. See the “bautas” which cover the entire face and display an unusually long chin. They were a favorite among those looking to conceal their identity. The ladies usually prefer the Moretta, a white velvet cover which adds to the elegance of any outfit. Adults, however, are not the only ones who get to have a great time. Children can participate in the array of contests held at St. Mark’s Square. The best costume, for instance, receives an award. History lovers will find the presentations at Campo San Barnaba especially appealing with programs featuring music from the medieval and seventh century periods. Other fabulous entertainment not to be missed includes the re-enactments of ancient style parades on the main squares and theater performances in Santa Croce. For those who can appreciate sublime food, part of the pleasures include tasting the diversity of specialties offered by eateries everywhere.
