Though Israel is a small country, it still takes time to see all of the country.
And if you want to see all that this gorgeous country has to offer, one of the best ways to do this is to rent a car. With a car, you can choose when and where you want to go, whether it’s to the far reaches of Israel’s northern border with Lebanon or to Eilat. There are a few things, however, that you should know about before you rent and drive a car in Israel
Rental prices are not cheap If you’re traveling from the states, you might be in for a bit of a sticker shock when you see the prices for rentals. Count on roughly $60 to $70 per day for a regular-sized sedan, though weekly rates are a bit cheaper. But during the off-season (fall, winter and spring excluding holidays), prices are cheaper.
Gas prices Gas prices are comparable to European prices. That means that prices are around $6 per gallon. Budget about $150 per week on gas.
Returning the car Rental agencies in Israel thoroughly check the car for any scratches or dents, no matter how small. And they will make you pay for it. Therefore, make sure they thoroughly document any scratches and marks beforehand and make sure you inspect the car with the sales associate. And during your rental period, be extra vigilant when driving and parking.
Israeli drivers Israeli drivers love to tailgate. If someone is tailgating you, just pull over to the slow lane (lane on the right). In fact, it’s best to drive in the left lane (especially on highways) only when passing. And like their Mediterranean brothers, Israeli drivers tend to be very aggressive and impatient. You’ll hear a cacophony of horns the second the light changes to green. But don’t feel pressured, as it’s more important to drive safely.
Highways The highway system in Israel is quite good. Roads are well marked (in English, Hebrew and Arabic) and well lit. There is one toll road in Israel (highway 6) that runs North-South and is reminiscent of the big highways in the states. You will automatically be billed by your car agency upon return of your car. Fees are not cheap (about $15 for the complete length) but you can avoid most traffic jams.
