All the other great masters of the Renaissance are also well represented. Saint Peter’s basilica is considered one of the world’s architectural masterpieces.

The Colosseum

This is the most famous remaining monument of the Roman Empire. Originally known as the Flavian amphitheater, it was also one of the largest buildings of its time. Today, the Colosseum is in ruins but enough of its original magnificence still remains to hint visitors of its past glory. The building is one hundred and eighty eight meters by one hundred and fifty six meters and is elliptical in shape. Its height reaches more than forty eight meters. It could house more than fifty five thousand spectators and has eighty entrances.

Piazza Navone

This beautiful square is one of Rome’s most beloved tourist attractions. Its three sculpted fountains are a marvel to behold. Piazza Navone also houses the Church of Sant’Agnese in Agone, a great example of Baroque architecture. The square itself was built on a stadium which was built by the emperor Domitian. This explains its unique oval shape.

The Pantheon

Another great monument of the Roman era is the Pantheon. Built over eighteen hundred years ago it is still an impressive sight. The most striking part of the building is its dome and the oculus, the round opening at its center, which is the Pantheon’s only source of light.
