Backpacking through Europe can be a truly life changing experience, whether you are going on your own, with friends or with your family.
When you backpack through Europe, you get the unique opportunity to soak up a wealth of culture, beautiful architecture, art, delicious international cuisine, history and life. Planning your backpacking adventure across Europe can be daunting. However, there are a huge number of books, online communities and other resources that you can use to help you plan your trip. The first thing that you’ll have to do is figure out your budget. This will give you an idea of how long you can travel for, what types of places you will need to stay in and how you will travel. Odds are, if you want to go backpacking for a while then you will want to find cheap places to stay. Luckily there are hostels available in most major European cities where you can find a cheap bed and meet other backpackers from around the globe. As far as travel goes, you can rent a car or take planes. However, trains are the best way to get around Europe - a EuRail or EuroRail pass can get you to basically any place you want to go. So where do you want to go? This is perhaps the most important part of planning your backpacking trip. Some of the most popular destinations for backpackers are Paris; Munich and Berlin; Vienna; Brussels and Bruges (in Belgium); Prague; Poland; Sweden; Denmark; England; Scotland; and Ireland. Do a bit of research online or in travel books to find out which countries interest you the most and which sites you would like to see while you’re there. Many backpackers like to plan out their entire trip ahead of time. However, some backpackers prefer to get an open-ended return ticket and go where the wind blows them until they deplete their budget and return home. If you are a free spirit, then this may be more your style, but if you like organization then it’s a good idea to plan your trip in advance. But beware - when traveling across Europe your trip will rarely go as planned, but that’s what makes it so exciting!
