Packing for a Ski Vacation

Packing for a Ski VacationSki vacations can be great fun.  Pick just about any colder climate location on the globe that has adequate ski runs, and you’ve just found yourself a ski vacation locale.

Besides ski runs, you’ll need to adequately pack to make your ski vacation a reality; otherwise, you’ll find yourself on the ski slopes a bit unprepared to take on Mother Nature.  To help you make your ski vacation as successful as possible, whether you choose the majestic heights of Lake Tahoe or the slopes in Switzerland, we’ve listed some of the essentials you’ll need to pack for your ski vacation.

Clothing
Bringing the right clothing can make or break your ski vacation.  The main point is that you should pack to keep warm.  Basically, you should pack three different layers of clothes: undergarments (long underwear); a turtleneck or sweater; and either a ski suit (ski pants and jacket) or a separate ski jacket and ski pants.  If it’s warm on the slopes, you might be able to get away with just a long sleeve shirt under the ski jacket.  Don’t forget about thermal socks, and bring more than one pair.  One piece of clothing you might need but might not think of packing is a bathing suit, as lots of ski lodges have outdoor Jacuzzis.

Accessories plus more
Pack a warm pair of gloves, but just not any pair.  Make sure they are water resistant and warm.  Bring along a ski hat, sunglasses or goggles and sunscreen.  You would be surprised what kind of burn you can get on the slopes on a sunny day, even on the coldest days.  Don’t forget to bring a pair of warm boots for those times you’re not busy skiing.

Ski equipment – to bring or not?
The question of whether to bring ski equipment – ski boots, skis and poles – depends upon a few factors.  If you feel comfortable only skiing with your own equipment, then bring it along if it’s realistic (i.e. if you’re driving, do you have a ski rack).  If it doesn’t matter either way to you, just find out if the place that you’re going to rents out ski equipment.  Ask for prices as well, as some ski shops can charge exorbitant prices.
