Snow, ice, rock and water make up Antarctica’s stunning and unique landscape, one that is like no other landscape in the world.
A visit to Antarctica is a one-of-a-kind experience, as Antarctica is a one-of-a-kind continent. With no native population, this southernmost continent is a truly spectacular nature reserve, filled with beautiful arctic landscapes and truly remarkable wildlife. There are three main ways to experience Antarctica. The most popular way, by far, is by boat cruise. There are commercial sea voyages throughout the year that head to the shores of Antarctica, usually from Argentina, New Zealand or Australia. More extreme tourists may opt for a land expedition, hiking around this huge arctic continent. Other tourists may opt to experience Antarctica by air, on a helicopter tour. While in Antarctica, one of the most dramatic and memorable attractions is the landscape. Depending upon where you are on the continent you could be surrounded by all-white surfaces and snowcaps, all-blue water and ice, all-black rock or a combination of the three. The landscapes are made up of rocky hills and mountains, sloping snow covered hills, ice and glaciers. You may be lucky enough to see a glacier break off the continent and head out to see. Aside from the landscapes, Antarctica is home to some of the most beautiful and unique wildlife. Antarctica is home to penguins, whales, seals and cold-adapted plants like mosses, lichen and a variety of types of algae. The Antarctic penguins are one of the continent’s greatest attractions. Tourists observe tens of thousands of penguins going about their daily business and go whale watching on the coast or out at sea. It is a truly unforgettable experience. Antarctica is also home to the South Pole, the southernmost point on Earth, which is a popular destination. Tourists also enjoy visiting Palmer Station, the Port Lockroy museum port and Cuverville Island in Anver Island and Anvord Bay. Antarctica is not as cold as many people think. However, the best time to visit is between November and March, when the temperature is slightly higher and the ice melts to allow access. If you can take the cold weather, then you will be handsomely rewarded with one of the most unique and beautiful travel experiences on Earth.
