Where the Dinosaurs Once Roamed |
|
This amazing historical park takes you back in time when dinosaurs roamed the earth and mankind was not even created. It’s truly a park that will interest people of all ages. Dinosaur Provincial Park is located about two hours from the beautiful Canadian city of Calgary. It’s fairly easy to reach by motor coach or by car from this picturesque city. Once you arrive, you’ll simply be amazed at the sheer size of this dinosaur park. What’s even more amazing is that roughly 75 million years ago, this area was sub-tropical in nature, as opposed to its current much colder climate. At that time, dinosaurs roamed this area freely as did other creatures such as crocodiles, sharks, a whole slew of reptiles and fish just to name a few. Today, all that remains of these prehistoric animals is their fossils. But these fossils make up the one of the biggest sites for dinosaur exploration. In fact, these remains are so crucial in putting the pieces together regarding this somewhat elusive time period that the park was dedicated as a World Heritage site in 1979. After all, an amazing 39 different dinosaur species have been discovered here and more than 500 remnants are on display in museums throughout the world. Besides viewing fossil remains in the park’s field station (part of the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology’s displays), you won’t want to miss the magnificent cottonwood river and badlands habitats. In fact, you can hike throughout the non-reserve section of the park and experience first hand the beauty and awe of this remarkable area. If you would rather hike with the experts, there are plenty of guided tours throughout the reserve section of the park. On your hikes, you’ll undoubtedly come upon fossil remains in some of the habitat’s dry bed areas. But if you would rather sit in a comfortable, air-conditioned bus, do consider one of the excellent bus tours that take you around the park and natural preserve area. You’ll simply be amazed at nature’s beauty in this land that time forgot.
